The History of Typography
Typefaces are classified based on their history or certain characteristics of their design, which helps graphic artists choose the look they want for their projects. I don’t think most people get the sometimes arduous decision-making process a web or graphic designer goes through to pick out typefaces.
Many of us remember when in printmaking class having maybe 200 typefaces at our disposal. Today there are thousands of typefaces available. A prerequisite for my Digital Media students is to understand a little about the history and categorization of typeface and how to pick an appropriate one for the project at hand. I even teach my students how to create their very own fonts.
I came across this awesome stop-motion video which succinctly and entertainingly explains the history of typography.
